Brutal Assault (Jaromer, CZ) 7.8.-10.8.2024

Ich hab eine Nummer von der Orga bekommen, die ich anrufen soll, falls in einem der Zelte wieder NSBM Kram verkauft wird. Falls die Nummer wer möchte, bitte PN an mich.

Wer von euch war das?
ijepc0.jpg

Laibach
DHG
Hexvessel
Yellow Eyes im Gewölbe
Cult of Fire, leider mit etwas Optimierungspotenzial beim Sound
Imperial Triumphant
Totenmesse
Master Boot Record

Des Weiteren
Brutus
Villagers of Ioannina City
Emperor
Ved Buens Ende
Candlemass
God is an Astronaut
(irgendwas hab ich noch vergessen)

Unto others live arg cheesig.

9. Cynic, weil Erinnerungen und sehr guter Sound
10. New Model Army, kannte ich kaum und habe mich keine Sekunde gelangweilt

Honorable Mentions: DHG, Imperial Triumphant, Hellripper, Yellow Eyes, Bewitched, God is an Astronaut, Totenmesse, Body of Pain, Exumer und Armored Saint (wegen Regen nur 3 Songs gesehen, wirkte sehr geil) und die ganzen Matcha-Getränke

My 5 eurocents:

BA 2024

Day Zero:

STELLAVRIS is a poor man’s Jinjer copy, with less technicality. Although all boxes are checked (female singer with outgoing personality, in sync stage movements, crowd participation), this just doesn’t do it for me. 2/5

LAID TO WASTE is a Czech thrash band performing both basic high-speed songs (from their earlier albums, I guess) and more technical thrashers (which I liked more). Was especially impressed by the clean, high-pitched vocals of the bassist/vocalist although he introduced songs with a growl, strange. They will release a new album in a day or two, will check it out. 3.5/5

HELLRIPPER was more than I expected. Much more. The playing, the songs, the cool crowd interaction. Also, the mad (!!!) amount of the energy coming from the stage constantly played with my mind to go into the pit – and that’s the proper reaction for black/speed metal. And they managed all that without playing two of their best songs IMO (“The Cursed Carrion Crown” and “Savage Blasphemy”). Also, fuck the all-triggered continuous blastfest with gazillion drum kicks, this is how you destroy your drum kit! One of the best sets I’ve seen in a long time, my blood gets pumping watching the clips from the show online. 5/5

Day One:

SKELETAL REMAINS opened the first official day of the fest. Although a good band, today their Morbid Angel/Pestilence brand of death metal didn’t leave a bigger impression on me. Blame Hellripper. 3/5

EVIL INVADERS did a bit better. Although I love their more melodic approach to speed metal (their last album is easily their best) and the stage presence is continuously energetic, they didn’t blow me away. Blame the sun. Still, a very solid and fun set. 3.5/5

SEVERE TORTURE is always a pleasant sight to this writer since they don’t gig that much. Their set focused mostly on their latest EP and full length (as expected) which are more straight forward blasty death than their early material. In the end I could use a song or two more from their groovy early Cannibal Corpse era, but the gurgle is still present and that makes me a happy listener. 3.75/5

TERRORIZER. Watched them for the first time here and was let down. Grindcore/deathgrind is energy-led music and that missed here. Pete Sandoval and David Vincent, veterans with tons of concert experience were probably holding back a bit meaning they did a routine show and that’s what I didn’t like. You don’t do a routine show at BA. Plus, vocalist Brain Werner looking like he plays in Finntroll didn’t help either. 3/5

SREFA’s brand of (post) black metal did literally nothing to me. Bland riffing and average female screeches. The crowd liked it though and that’s most important. 2/5

VLTIMAS. David Vincent the second appearance, this time as mad hatter. Although Blasphemer is one of the riff heroes of extreme metal, this band is too safe sounding for my taste. I get the intention to have less-complex, song oriented extreme metal albums but it doesn’t translate the best live, especially with Vincent who did his part but looked phoned it. 2.5/5

DEICIDE last year on the same fest were literally perfect. This time they weren’t too much behind. No talking just playing which is easy with such a great repertoire of (early phase) songs. Again they proved they are a force live. This time without the perfect score since last time they played “Legion” in full. Deicide delivers again. 4.5/5

DISKORD was a kick in the face of weird dissonant death metal. Such effortless execution of complex songs. Enjoyed their enthusiasm of being on this fest. A deserved spot. These smaller bands are the best reason to go to Brutal Assault. 4/5

Day Two:

NECROT did their best to present their brand of old-school death metal this early in the morning (10:30). Solid, but they would made a better impression on a smaller stage, later in the evening. 3.25/5

OBSCURA are, unfortunately, the only band I’ve witnessed live on BA (this being my 11th time) that cut short their set due to technical difficulties. Those cables, man. In the end they played a three song set. Which really is unfortunate since those three songs were played with conviction. Also, apparently the bands line-up fell apart again, since Kummerer appeared on stage with new live musicians, the great James Stewart being one of them. Something is rotten in the state of Obscura. n/a

ESCUELA GRIND was one of the best surprises of BA. The four piece presented a lovely combination of grindcore, death metal and hardcore. Knowing nothing beforehand about the band, they impressed with a measured combination of blasts, grooves and headbangable riffs, all wrapped in short and to-the-point songs. Also, the sheer joy of performing in front of such a big audience elevated the show by another 20%. The whole band was ecstatic, funny and relaxed. Loved this. 4.5/5

BLOCKHEADS was one of my main reasons to go to BA. French grindcore scene is momentarily the world’s best, hands down (Chiens, Blockheads, Warfuck, Whoresnation, Hordur, Unsu, Fumist, just to name a few). Rain stopped falling just when they hit the stage. Since the band is active since the middle of the nineties, it looked like they were struggling a bit with full blast onslaught, especially the drummer who sounded sloppy a few times. To be clear, this is did not impact the quality of the performance, especially since the vocalist is a master of pumping up the crowd, making the circle pit bigger after every song. In the end, too short a set! And they brought no merch with them, wtf man. 4.25/5

BEWITCHED. Well, there’s a band I never thought I’d see live #1. Easily the best band Marcus Norman is associated with. The band was holding back a bit in the beginning but with focus clearly on the first two albums (black/thrash with razor sharp riffing), they could do no wrong. This was a nostalgia trip back to high school, thank you. 4/5

CARCASS is a band I will never miss when the opportunity arises. One of the heroes oy my metal youth, this band delivers purely based on the strength of the songs without shenanigans aside. And the songs are good. The set was kinda standard, but they ended with “Tools of the Trade” which I definitely didn’t expect. 4.5/5

TULUS. Well, there’s a band I never thought I’d see live #2. Without any black metal circus, this trio put an intimate show on a small stage based on mid-tempo. The guitars were clear as night bringing out small intricacies in the riffs. Although basic, their music was a welcome change on the ears. 3.75/5

SATYRICON. Although I’m still conflicted between their early (better) and latter (not so good) phase, I can’t deny the strength of the black ’n’ roll songs when played live. Aside from “Mother North”, these songs are clearly fan favorite and there was clearly less enthusiasm when “Forhekset” or “Hvite Krists dod” was played. Satyr was kinda emotional on stage with some strange banter between songs (something like … I can’t remember when we played here last time but I know well what’s it like to be on the left stage … um, what?). A good show but they didn’t play “Flithgrinder” and that’s 0.25 points off. 3.75/5

VOMITORY. In all previous years I’ve been to BA, after the headliners, slower and doomy bands take the stage. Which makes sense since it is after midnight, to cool everything down. But this year they changed this practice, by replacing those with more energetic bands. And not just energetic, but with brain pummeling bands, such as Vomitory. To be clear, Vomitory rocks live like they did this time. The combination of blasts and d-beats for every time, like a charm. But the audience was visibly tired and the band would certainly get more back if they played during the day. 3.5/5

Day Three:

ROTTEN SOUND. When an established band like Rotten Sound plays at 11:45 am, one has to wonder who decides on the time slots when bands play. Being grindcore legends, RS is always a pleasure to witness, but 11:45 am is too early for grinding, even for me J. One more thing: the Swedish chainsaw HM-2 tone is a classic, but mostly comes as very muddy live. So, the guitars and vocals easily overpowered the guitars and that didn’t help either. 3/5

LIK. The same thing happened to Swedish death metal, and not just grindcore. I can understand that Lik played on borrowed gear, but combining two guitars with HM-2 tone just gets everything very much unclear. I guess I was in minority. Great band, nevertheless. 3/5

UFOMAMMUT. Sludge/doom isn’t my forte. That being said, I enjoyed the first 5 minutes of the mammoth (ha!) riffs and spacey vocals, but it got old really fast. 3/5

IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT. I love me some Imperial Triumphant, their music must be heard in the live environment. This time unfortunately it didn’t hit the mark for me. Mostly because of the setlist focusing almost exclusively on “Vile Luxury”. Their music generally is hard on the ears, but this album especially is a tough one to swallow. At least a song or two from the latest album would do the trick. Also the shtick with champagne is overdone, it’s time for a stage refresh. 3/5

ABORTED is also a band me likes. But. But. Ken Bedene is a monster drummer, effortlessly moving around the kit and looks like a cool guy. But their albums and their live performance are becoming overshadowed by the drums being front and center. On top of that, put effects and guitars on full maximum so they can get through drums and you get a wall of sound that should be extreme but is all but extreme since there is no variation. Also, Sven, jumping jacks, really? 2.5/5

VILLAGERS OF IOANNINA CITY is a cool band, blending Greek folk with stoner/post metal. But even they continued the streak of average shows on this Friday. It could be I’m the problem and not the bands. Makes sense. 3/5

CYNIC. Technical problems with Cynic also, but not on Obscura level. This time – the vocoder. It sounded strange when Paul started singing clean and my first thought was “Well, that’s bad”, but it turned out they were bad because they didn’t go through vocoder. After everything got set, the music sounded really pretentious, couldn’t stand it. Yep, it’s definitely me. 2.5/5

LEFT TO DIE finally brought some light on today’s day. And how could they miss, they played almost all of Death’s “Leprosy” plus some “Scream Bloody Gore” cuts. Perfect sound, Matt Harvey in the best form, great crowd reaction. Thank you. 4/5

CANDLEMASS. I don’t wanna sound like an idiot, but by witnessing guys from Candlemass performing live, it hit me how our beloved metal got old. Candlemass didn’t play tricks, they focused on their first four classic albums. Although everything sounded fine and heavy and classic, I missed seeing My Dying Bride who were originally supposed to play. 3.5/5

CEPHALIC CARNAGE was finally something right up my alley and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Why? The setlist consisted of lots of songs from “Anomalies”, the band was funny and in good spirits and those chaotic moments (for example the fast parts in “Kill for Weed”) which they are known for really sounded massive on stage. New album, CC? 4.25/5

KHOLD was basically the same as Tulus but as a four piece. Not something I would listen to at home, but refreshing and measured live. 3.75/5

Day Four:

CYTOTOXIN, for the time slot they’ve been given (12:20 am), had a huge crowd. Which just proves that if you have a shtick related to your music (in their case, radiation), it works wonders. Their music combines the technical aspect of Origin (sweeps, yadda yadda), brutality of Aborted and a bit of deathcore. Something I would turn my back on to very soon. But, I have to admit, the vocalist is entertaining, the band tight and the songs solid so I cannot give a low grade. 3.5/5

PS. The “party” aspect with some extreme bands this year was pretty strong with Party Canon having push-ups, Aborted jumping jacks and now Cytotoxyn what not. Please bands, spare us next year and in the future in general.

SINISTER was the last minute replacement for Broken Hope. They focused almost entirely on their newer phase. Although “The Carnage Ending” is a very good record, playing only “Sadistic Intent” from their first three records is definitely not enough. Still, a good performance. The only thing that was not needed were vocalist’s Aad’s comments that he waited 27 years to be invited to the fest, which made him sound like a bitter old grandpa. And, kudos to the Slovenian rhythm section of the band! 3.25/5

PLINI is this year’s instrumental prog/djent/fusion band of the fest. In all other cases, such bands would not feel comfortable playing festival with such a name, but BA crowd welcomes everyone with open arms/ears which is one of the beautiful things of the fest. The music is proggy and flowing, with lots of solos. OK. 3/5

GOROD never disappoints. Never. Such a good sight to see smiling band members enjoying every second of the show while effortlessly harmonizing, blasting and complex-riffing. Do not miss this band live. 4.5/5

PESTILENCE were ok. Mameli was polite on stage (as always) but in combination with that piercing stare it looked both funny and unsettling. The thing that mattered the most to me was for him not to fuck up the second solo in “Twisted Truth”. Please Patrick that is the only thing you have to do. Fortunately, it was 70% percent ok and that was good enough. No complaints from the technical point. 3.25/5

CHTHE’ILIST. Well, there’s a band I never thought I’d see live #3. Out of nothing, they are a full touring band and they delivered a set of bizarre death metal for the ages. Loved everything about this: the weird song structures Franco-Canadian style, slappy bass, doomy/chaotic parts and throaty madness from the vocalist. While we’re at the vocalist, he was channeling his best on-stage bat-shit crazy persona of Sylvain Houde. Although they are mostly compared to Demilich, these guys definitely stand on their own. In top 3 shows of BA this year! 5/5

TOTENMESSE is a Polish BM band, on a more traditional side. The straightforwardness of the music is compensated by the sheer hysteria of the vocalist. Both raw and blasty. Not bad! 3.5/5

EMPEROR. My first time seeing them live and they did not disappoint. Being a mature and more technically proficient band, I thought the sound would be more balanced meaning the chaos of an album such as “Anthems” would be gone in live surroundings. Well, I’m happy to inform I was wrong, the chaos and sometimes incomprehensibility was still present. The whole band was tight with Ihsahn looking glad to be on stage. The only thing I would change is for them to play other songs from the last two albums than the usual suspects. The teenager I would be satisfied. 4.5/5

DODHEIMSGARD. The best show of BA. The songs from “Black Medium Current” shone in all their melancholic-emotional glory. Perfect sound. Vicotnik being both crazy on stage and ecstatic by the crowd’s positive reaction. The whole band smiling. One of rare bands where the fast straight forward early black metal stuff felt out of place. Give us the weird stuff! The show where both band and the crowd wanted to play more, in the end. Legendary! 5/5

WORM. Such a confusing band. Visually a black metal band, playing more death/doom with technically proficient solos. Expected more but still glad I saw them live. 3.25/5

Ich glaube Knoblauchsuppe gab es am Crepestand. Ob vegetarisch oder vegan, weiss ich nicht. Crepes waren jedenfalls lecker.
