My 5 eurocents:
BA 2024
Day Zero:
STELLAVRIS is a poor man’s Jinjer copy, with less technicality. Although all boxes are checked (female singer with outgoing personality, in sync stage movements, crowd participation), this just doesn’t do it for me. 2/5
LAID TO WASTE is a Czech thrash band performing both basic high-speed songs (from their earlier albums, I guess) and more technical thrashers (which I liked more). Was especially impressed by the clean, high-pitched vocals of the bassist/vocalist although he introduced songs with a growl, strange. They will release a new album in a day or two, will check it out. 3.5/5
HELLRIPPER was more than I expected. Much more. The playing, the songs, the cool crowd interaction. Also, the mad (!!!) amount of the energy coming from the stage constantly played with my mind to go into the pit – and that’s the proper reaction for black/speed metal. And they managed all that without playing two of their best songs IMO (“The Cursed Carrion Crown” and “Savage Blasphemy”). Also, fuck the all-triggered continuous blastfest with gazillion drum kicks, this is how you destroy your drum kit! One of the best sets I’ve seen in a long time, my blood gets pumping watching the clips from the show online. 5/5
Day One:
SKELETAL REMAINS opened the first official day of the fest. Although a good band, today their Morbid Angel/Pestilence brand of death metal didn’t leave a bigger impression on me. Blame Hellripper. 3/5
EVIL INVADERS did a bit better. Although I love their more melodic approach to speed metal (their last album is easily their best) and the stage presence is continuously energetic, they didn’t blow me away. Blame the sun. Still, a very solid and fun set. 3.5/5
SEVERE TORTURE is always a pleasant sight to this writer since they don’t gig that much. Their set focused mostly on their latest EP and full length (as expected) which are more straight forward blasty death than their early material. In the end I could use a song or two more from their groovy early Cannibal Corpse era, but the gurgle is still present and that makes me a happy listener. 3.75/5
TERRORIZER. Watched them for the first time here and was let down. Grindcore/deathgrind is energy-led music and that missed here. Pete Sandoval and David Vincent, veterans with tons of concert experience were probably holding back a bit meaning they did a routine show and that’s what I didn’t like. You don’t do a routine show at BA. Plus, vocalist Brain Werner looking like he plays in Finntroll didn’t help either. 3/5
SREFA’s brand of (post) black metal did literally nothing to me. Bland riffing and average female screeches. The crowd liked it though and that’s most important. 2/5
VLTIMAS. David Vincent the second appearance, this time as mad hatter. Although Blasphemer is one of the riff heroes of extreme metal, this band is too safe sounding for my taste. I get the intention to have less-complex, song oriented extreme metal albums but it doesn’t translate the best live, especially with Vincent who did his part but looked phoned it. 2.5/5
DEICIDE last year on the same fest were literally perfect. This time they weren’t too much behind. No talking just playing which is easy with such a great repertoire of (early phase) songs. Again they proved they are a force live. This time without the perfect score since last time they played “Legion” in full. Deicide delivers again. 4.5/5
DISKORD was a kick in the face of weird dissonant death metal. Such effortless execution of complex songs. Enjoyed their enthusiasm of being on this fest. A deserved spot. These smaller bands are the best reason to go to Brutal Assault. 4/5
Day Two:
NECROT did their best to present their brand of old-school death metal this early in the morning (10:30). Solid, but they would made a better impression on a smaller stage, later in the evening. 3.25/5
OBSCURA are, unfortunately, the only band I’ve witnessed live on BA (this being my 11th time) that cut short their set due to technical difficulties. Those cables, man. In the end they played a three song set. Which really is unfortunate since those three songs were played with conviction. Also, apparently the bands line-up fell apart again, since Kummerer appeared on stage with new live musicians, the great James Stewart being one of them. Something is rotten in the state of Obscura. n/a
ESCUELA GRIND was one of the best surprises of BA. The four piece presented a lovely combination of grindcore, death metal and hardcore. Knowing nothing beforehand about the band, they impressed with a measured combination of blasts, grooves and headbangable riffs, all wrapped in short and to-the-point songs. Also, the sheer joy of performing in front of such a big audience elevated the show by another 20%. The whole band was ecstatic, funny and relaxed. Loved this. 4.5/5
BLOCKHEADS was one of my main reasons to go to BA. French grindcore scene is momentarily the world’s best, hands down (Chiens, Blockheads, Warfuck, Whoresnation, Hordur, Unsu, Fumist, just to name a few). Rain stopped falling just when they hit the stage. Since the band is active since the middle of the nineties, it looked like they were struggling a bit with full blast onslaught, especially the drummer who sounded sloppy a few times. To be clear, this is did not impact the quality of the performance, especially since the vocalist is a master of pumping up the crowd, making the circle pit bigger after every song. In the end, too short a set! And they brought no merch with them, wtf man. 4.25/5
BEWITCHED. Well, there’s a band I never thought I’d see live #1. Easily the best band Marcus Norman is associated with. The band was holding back a bit in the beginning but with focus clearly on the first two albums (black/thrash with razor sharp riffing), they could do no wrong. This was a nostalgia trip back to high school, thank you. 4/5
CARCASS is a band I will never miss when the opportunity arises. One of the heroes oy my metal youth, this band delivers purely based on the strength of the songs without shenanigans aside. And the songs are good. The set was kinda standard, but they ended with “Tools of the Trade” which I definitely didn’t expect. 4.5/5
TULUS. Well, there’s a band I never thought I’d see live #2. Without any black metal circus, this trio put an intimate show on a small stage based on mid-tempo. The guitars were clear as night bringing out small intricacies in the riffs. Although basic, their music was a welcome change on the ears. 3.75/5
SATYRICON. Although I’m still conflicted between their early (better) and latter (not so good) phase, I can’t deny the strength of the black ’n’ roll songs when played live. Aside from “Mother North”, these songs are clearly fan favorite and there was clearly less enthusiasm when “Forhekset” or “Hvite Krists dod” was played. Satyr was kinda emotional on stage with some strange banter between songs (something like … I can’t remember when we played here last time but I know well what’s it like to be on the left stage … um, what?). A good show but they didn’t play “Flithgrinder” and that’s 0.25 points off. 3.75/5
VOMITORY. In all previous years I’ve been to BA, after the headliners, slower and doomy bands take the stage. Which makes sense since it is after midnight, to cool everything down. But this year they changed this practice, by replacing those with more energetic bands. And not just energetic, but with brain pummeling bands, such as Vomitory. To be clear, Vomitory rocks live like they did this time. The combination of blasts and d-beats for every time, like a charm. But the audience was visibly tired and the band would certainly get more back if they played during the day. 3.5/5
