King Crimson

Mister Stormy has been rummaging in the King Crimson archives and has come up with this gem from the THRAK sessions...

By the time King Crimson arrived at Real World Studios to record THRAK most of the material had been played-in at a series of concerts in Argentina. Compared to other songs and pieces that appear on THRAK however, Walking On Air had only been performed a couple of times. This alternative take from the sessions reveals a song that’s still in the process of finding its final shape and form. Trey Gunn’s embellishments around Levin’s undulating bass figure are drop-dead gorgeous. In concert, Trey’s work was often undermixed and/or overlooked. In this stripped-back setting, his playing is heard in exquisite close detail before he’s joined by Fripp’s diaphanous cloudscapes. Gently propelled in part by Bruford on the same slit drum he used on The Sheltering Sky, the still-provisional nature of the song is emphasised when we hear Adrian call out “E” to usher the song to its conclusion.

Extended Crimsoverse-shit: Theo Travis Solo-Show

Like many musicians trying to work in the age of lockdown and cancellations, Theo Travis will be offering a streamed live performance on July 30th at 8.15 GMT. Theo, best-known to KC fans for his work with Travis & Fow-Streamripp, writes. "This is exciting news! I will be performing a solo gig for those lovely people at the SoundCellar in Poole, Dorset UK which will be streamed live via Zoom.

Ticket info is all on the SoundCellar website and tickets are available through Eventbrite. One great thing, especially for those of you in the USA or other places in a different time zone to the UK is that the ticket means you can watch the gig at a later time/ date.

For this gig – which will my first ever solo streamed gig and one of my rare completely solo performances, you can expect music from my solo albums – ‘Slow Life’ and ‘Open Air’, ambient and experimental improvisations, radical rearrangements of pieces from albums such as ‘Heart of the Sun’ and ‘Earth to Ether’, a cover of a John Surman classic, alto flute, soprano sax, tenor sax and possibly a surprise or two as well.

The performance will be about 50 mins and straight after there will be a Question and Answer session. It should be a lot of fun, so do please save the date, get your ticket, and do come along. It will be great to see you there!"

Crimsoverse-related:

There's a new League of Crafty Guitarists album available. Live in South America includes new repertoire for the ensemble and also takes in an eclectic selection of King Crimson pieces such as Neil, Jack And Me, Coda 475, Dangerous Curves and The Letters.

Thus sayeth the blurb. . .

The album reflects the work of the last official incarnations of The League Of Crafty Guitarists before the Completion of GC in March 2017. It includes a selection of live recordings from four LCG configurations that were centered around the same core team who toured South America from April 2015 to November 2016.

We have decided to make this album available for free listening on Bandcamp in MP3 streaming quality. If what you hear resonates with you and you wish to support this project, please buy the album on Bandcamp where you can download it as high-resolution files of your choice in far better audio quality.

Neue Goodies von Stick Man Reuter auf MoonJune im Herbst. Oculus ist mit David Cross!

Jakko Jakszyk's first solo album since becoming a member of King Crimson in 2013 will be released on October 23rd.

Entitled Secrets & Lies, the record features contributions from fellow KC bandmates Robert Fripp, Gavin Harrison, Tony Levin, and Mel Collins.

There are also appearances by Al Murray, Simple Minds' John Giblin, and Level 42's Mark King.

Peter Hammill, with whom Jakszyk also co-wrote one of the songs on the album, also appears on vocals and guitar.

Jakko says," The enforced sabbatical from King Crimson has given me the opportunity to complete a new solo album. Encouraged by Thomas Waber at InsideOutMusic, and aided and abetted by numerous friends, heroes and family, "Secrets & Lies" will be released on 23rd October 2020."

There's a new website to promote the album over at
https://jakko.com/#news

‘Secrets & Lies’ contains 10 songs that explore topics such as obsession, betrayal, the shifting grounds of contemporary politics, and the tangled threads of family history, Secrets And Lies balances sensitive writing, musical technique, and accessible tunes cast in an impressively cinematic sound world.

With three of the tracks, Separation, Under Lock & Key and Uncertain Times originating in King Crimson's writing sessions, the result is a mature work brimming with yearning melodies in symphonic or widescreen settings, fluid guitar work, and Jakko’s heartfelt, emotional vocals.

The album features Jakszyk joined by his King Crimson bandmates Robert Fripp, Gavin Harrison, Tony Levin & Mel Collins, as well as appearances from John Giblin (Simple Minds), Mark King (Level 42), Peter Hammill (Van der Graff Generator) and noted British comedian Al Murray.

‘Secrets & Lies’ will be released as a Limited CD+DVD Digipak (featuring 5.1 mix), Gatefold LP + CD & as Digital Album. The cover art was created by Sam Chegini, with design by Phil Smee, and you can find the full track-listing below:

TourBox2020-300x300.jpg

A 2020 addition to the popular Tour Box series originally prepared for the postponed USA 2020 tour.

As with previous releases in the series, the full variety of King Crimson’s music is presented over 2 CDs with extracts from rehearsals, live recordings, elements from studio recordings, alternate takes and more from between 1969-2019. Tour Box 2020 includes 15 previously unreleased recordings.

The main sleeve-notes by KC historian Sid Smith present a series of (highly plausible) ‘what if?’ scenarios; routes and pathways the band could have followed had things been slightly different.

Disc one presents a mostly live selection of material, including four tracks taken from the 2019 tour. Disc two, in keeping with Sid Smith’s notes, presents pieces played only occasionally by the current line-up, pieces from the studio (both King Crimson and Robert Fripp that were never completed or developed in different ways), and material that never made it to a studio recording.

Packaged in a DVD-sized fold out digipak style book case with a 24 page booklet including sleeve notes by co-compiler Sid Smith and introductory notes by Robert Fripp.
