"'The Sorceress' combines complexity and catchiness with sublimity in an inimitable way. It begins with a haunting, yet melodious acoustic intro, before a riff that uses not only an unconventional melody on, but also a very strange time signature that changes within measures, complemented by unusual cymbal patterns. The chorus is more typical melodic power metal, before diving back into the verse. All the while with a galloping ruthenium, kind of like a horse with bent legs. The song then gets a little heavier, but the psychedelic melodies give it a very dream-like atmosphere. It then descends into a very heavy, chugging, yet still very strange riff. This is the song at its darkest point, although the vocals still use somewhat folkish melodies. Then it revolves its verse and chorus, before ending. The refinded drumming, creative and heavy riffing, beautiful melodies, interesting and unorthodox songwriting, the changes of tempo and time signature and of course John Arch's absolutely astonishing falsetto (the man’s signature style is to create completely alternate melodies to what guitarists Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti play, yet his vocal lines always weave in and out throughout the music) - music can't get more fascinating than this." Once 'The Sorcerers' kicks into high gear after a spellbinding acoustic intro, it’s clear that "Awaken the Guardian" isn’t made for wimps; the colossal riffs gallop onward with malice and right away you’ve stumbled on what might as well be the band’s heaviest album opener of all time. The stories are vivid and poetic, enjoyable on any level, but very rewarding to interpret and explore. Clues to the concepts that Arch wove into this album are spread throughout. One theme is the idea of arcane or esoteric knowledge, the interpretation of which is left open to the listener. The unification of all of these fantasies and folklores of different origins is very mindful, as Arch brings together all of the stories through the shared concepts. The extent to which these concepts are woven together through Arch's works is fascinating, with certain recurring references and phrases.
