(Steve Harris)
"The first thing one notices about 'Caught Somewhere In Time' is the guitar synth, which is heavily applied in the song's intro. However, once the track gets going the synth pretty much disappears. Some argue that this song was somehow inspired by the 1979 film "Time After Time", in which H.G. Wells, the famous Science-Fiction author, invents a time machine incidentally. Wells actually wrote a famous novel called "The Time Machine", published in 1895, by the way. The story relates how Wells pursues one of his friends, who turns out to be Jack the Ripper, into the late 1970s where Jack has found refuge in a world of violence that he considers his "natural habitat". The song itself is about someone who is apparently being urged to sell their soul, although what is being offered in exchange remains unclear. This is one of the few songs where Dickinson's singing is not quite so palatable, mainly in the chorus where it seems like he is trying to sing too loudly. The result is something that is almost shouting and borderline out of tune. Otherwise, it is a decent song." (ironmaidencommentary.com)
"The most underrated of Maiden’s ‘80s albums by a mile, "Somewhere In Time" came between two major milestones and, as a result, seldom gets the props it deserves. In fact, it’s fucking stunning and still sounds fresh and vital almost 40 years after its release. 'Caught Somewhere In Time' is one of Maiden’s greatest album openers, and another of Maiden's classics based around popular culture. Brave, ambitious and tough as nails, this tune took the band screeching into the future. In fact, the film it's named after – 1979 sci-fi movie "Time After Time" – is the very same movie which inspired the Cyndi Lauper track of the same name. " (Metal Hammer UK)
"This is a song that is often discarded as "good, maybe even very good, but not the best on the album". I say: No!! This song is absolutely phenomenal and stands heads and shoulders above everything else on this album; which in itself is an astronomical feat considering how strong a line-up "Somewhere In Time" has. So why is 'Caught Somewhere In Time' the best song on this album? The way I see it, it's both a flawlessly crafted song and yet, such a risky and audacious move by the band, being the first synthesized song that most fans hear, considering the ever popular 'Wasted Years' (that was released prior to the album as the first single) possesses no synths. Maiden could have sabotaged their integrity with "Somewhere In Time", but instead, they knocked it right out of the park with their opening song, with each band member showcasing some of their best work to date in this song. Indulging in the song's technicalities, the opening bass line, accompanied with the escalating guitar helps set the futuristic and ominous atmosphere that the song wants to create, as well as slowly drawing the listener into the new musical style Iron Maiden had adopted, before the song EXPLODES into an adrenaline pumping frenzy of music for the rest of the song, the guitar riffs in particular stealing the show in this regard. Let's not forget Bruce's astonishing vocals in this song, in particular the chorus and his bellow of ""Tiiiiiime...is always on my siiiiiide!". The guitar solos are both brilliant, adding even more to the atmosphere of the song and both creating a sense of urgency that this song promotes exquisitely. For an experimentation effort, this song is beyond a masterpiece. Disregarding that, it's still an absolutely incredible song that helped solidify the seemingly hazardous "Somewhere In Time" as one of my favourites of all-time."
