Garrett: "Savatage's and Paul O'Neills' Streets: A Rock Opera was released in 1991 by Atlantic Records. Originally intended as a double album, Atlantic Records decided to scratch the double album and released it as a solo album/cd/tape. All the recordings for the project were then stored at the Atlantic Records vault.
Years later, after the success of Paul O'Neills' and Jon Oliva's Trans-Siberian Orchestra, they wanted to release Srreets: A Rock Opera - The Story Of D.T. Jesus in its entirety, only to find out Atlantic Records misplaced the original recorded tracks in their vault and cannot find them. Oliva and O'Neill even offered a $1000.00 reward for anyone who could find them; none could.
Rock Duck Radio is now proud to present for the first time ever, the infamous Streets A Rock Opera Double Album restored in its entirety (almost). Some are the original recordings, just lower quality, others such as 'Desiree' are familiar to the Savatage fanbase with Zach Stevens singing, butt can now be heard in its proper context of the full D.T. Jesus storyline, kind of like the song 'Stay' as well. One song I was not able to get and that was 'Sanctuary', but it was substituted with the song 'Target', which is what it was originally based on anyway.
Songs like 'Beyond Broadway' and others are the original 'lost tracks'. The worst track I found was 'Island Of The Kings'. It was a very rough 4-track demo with a lot of tape hiss; fortunately, in the context of the D.T. Jesus storyline it really works. A lot of work went into the making and restoration of this rock masterpiece, I hope you enjoy!
Paul O'Neills vision can now be heard the way he intended it, may he Rock In Peace up in heaven with our brother Criss Oliva, this video is for you my friends, U.R.O.K!"

Letzte Woche zufällig reingehört und schnell genervt gewesen.
Andauernd dieses "Rock Duck" in den Songs.
Macht mir die Freude über die Songs kaputt.

Steht doch im Text, anscheinend sind die Originalaufnahmen nicht mehr auffindbar. Deshalb ist ja auch die Qualität sehr unterschiedlich. Die haben das vermutlich aus diversen Quellen zusammengetragen. Ich würde aber auch mal bezweifeln, dass Savatage wirklich alles in Studioqualität final aufgenommen hatten. Wahrscheinlicher ist doch eher, dass sie schon während der Produktion einige Songs, zu denen es vielleicht Demos gab, gestrichen oder in Rohversionen belassen haben und sich auf die anderen fokussiert haben.
Aber schön wär‘s schon, wenn man quasi noch ein halbes Criss Oliva Album bekäme…

Alleine bis dato unbekanntes Gitarrenspiel von Criss zu hören, hat mich echt in eine neue Dimension befördert.
Da muss doch was zu machen sein! Man müsste irgendwie an die Dateien der "neuen" Tracks rankommen und die ggf. etwas aufmöbeln. Das Ganze dann mit der schon vorhandenen "narrated version" des Albums zusammenpacken und fertig ist einer meiner Lebensträume (kein Witz).

Was es bekannt, dass Steeets als Doppelalbum konzipiert war? Ist mir völlig neu.
Das ganze mal in seiner ursprünglichen Version zu hören, wäre natürlich der ultimative Knaller, selbst wenn klanglich kein Hifidelity mehr möglich sein sollte.

Aber ich hatte das bisher eher so aufgefasst, dass Songs von der LP gestrichen wurden, weil sie nicht auf eine LP passten. Beim Original-Release enthielt die CD ja schon einige Songs mehr („If I go away“ und „St. Patrick’s“, glaube ich). Und man wusste, es gab vielleicht noch ein, zwei weitere (wie „Larry Elbows“).
Aber das, was jetzt auf YouTube veröffentlicht wurde, würde ja bedeuten, es gab quasi fast noch ein Album an Material.

Laut O´Neill hatte es wohl hauptsächlich ökonomische Gründe. Man wollte den Käufern nicht einen teuren Doppelrelease zumuten. Wahrscheinlich hatte die Plattenfirma einen großen Einfluss auf diese Entscheidung.

Eigentlich war die US und EU-Erstpressung ja schon zu lange für eine LP, obwohl sie "nur" Act I und II enthält. Trotz der langen Spielzeit von einer halben Stunde pro Seite klingt sie aber sehr gut.
