DEATH METAL FROM CHILE

Vom chilenischen "Proglotida Gravida"-Zine werde ich gerade regelmäßig mit Bandempfehlungen überhäuft. Vielleicht ist ja was für den einen oder anderen dabei:

Torture Machine is a death metal band, belonging to Santiago de Chile, formed in 2010 by drummer Camilo Anrique. The band in those years, influenced by a traditional death metal, but at the same time with modern touches, released their first Ep debut, called “Mortuary”, which consists of 7 devastating and merciless tracks, produced and mastered by guitarist Sergio Rojas, in Nihil Records studios and released to the Chilean market under the Australis Records label.
This Ep was well received by critics, opening several opportunities and presentations in various plays, one of the most important, the band battle for Metal Fest 2014. Mortuary had various reviews both within Chile and abroad.
After closing the Mortuary cycle, a composition stage began for what would be the first Lp. During this period, the band took a break in terms of live performances, to concentrate their efforts only to work on new songs. At the beginning of 2016 the drumming sessions began, and the next step was already planned, but due to different problems it was decided to leave the band in a period of recess of approximately 3 years.
At the end of 2018, after some attempts at reunion, it was decided to retake the band and start working on an upcoming album, but with a more mature vision and more focused than ever. Currently, and working silently, Torture Machine is in the process of mastering and editing its new work, which is already recorded in its entirety to soon give birth to its first Lp.The band mixes neat and technical death metal with influences from the slightly more melodic death metal of the Scandinavian death school of the nineties, such as At the Gates, the old Dark Tranquility or Hypocrisy, or Amorphis; and also much of the more aggressive style of groups like Decapitated or Cryptopsy, and a strong technical and melodic influence of bands like Aborted, Decrepit Birth, Cattle Decapitation, Beyond Creation, Carnifex, without losing their atmosphere or musical intention in an intricately technicality , always maintaining cohesion and coherence in the songs, full of groove and catchy rhythms despite the hostility. An important aspect is the atmosphere and atmosphere of his works, with a mix and mastering that point to modern sound, independent that a good part of his school and influence comes from the old school of European death metal.

Since 2009, Skullpture has been playing and playing on the Chilean Death Metal circuit, with many gigs and concerts in the coffin, it is one of the most active bands in the current Chilean death metal scene when it comes to playing live. They have two demos circulating on the underground scene, and a couple of months ago they released their first full-length album, recorded, produced and edited in a totally professional way. With quite a school and marked influence of the North American death metal from Florida and California of the nineties such as the old Cannibal Corpse, Death, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, Autopsy, Terrorizer, to name a few, Skullpture is one of the bands that have a classic sound but worked with the current technique and approach, differing a bit from the current of European death metal that has marked the current Chilean scene during these years, you can also find some less marked similarities with current North American bands such as Disma, Funebrarum, as well as Skeletal Remains, Necrot and Of Feather and Bone. Their recent long-playing album "Reborn in decay" was recorded and produced by the Chilean sound engineer Sergio Rojas at the Nihil Records studio, one of the most experienced Chilean studios as far as current death metal is concerned, where they achieved a direct sound and hostile, but neat and well defined. Until before the Chilean and world contingency due to the pandemic, Skullpture was active scheduling various dates and live performances (as is his custom), in Chile there are not many real spaces or opportunities for good Death metal, so there are few the bands that manage to get to have presentations in a continuous and habitual way, however Skullpture is one of the bands that most often appear live in Santiago de Chile; now they are working on their next album, in addition to promoting and disseminating their music with foreign labels, magazines and promoters, since although the album was released in Chile in CD and cassette format, there are hardly any labels truly dedicated to production, Edition and diffusion of the quality death metal that is currently generating the Chilean scene.

Sadistic - "Surrounded by Evil" (2016)

601485.jpg

Evil Hatred is an old-school 90s death metal band from North America, heavily inspired by Florida and California death metal by bands like the old Possessed, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, and Also a lot of Immolation, Morbid Angel, Deicide and Terrorizer. Despite having something like 3 years, it has an interesting live demo titled "Alive" and with this, its debut album consecrated with the name "Rotten Decay", this blasphemous act consists of 11 feverish Death Metal hymns, at To review this aberration, you will find very interesting pieces such as "Ancient Path of Hate" that begins with a terrifying story which begins the chaotic. Another track that stands out is "Hecatombe with the Dead" for the schizophrenic, hostile and agile of its sound, its riffs and beats; however there are also some dense and slow passages that give a gloomy atmosphere.
"The Bloody Insurrection", "Serviants of the Lake of Fire"; "The Day of Darkness" and "Raining Poison" are other of the murderous tracks of this debut album, which unlike most Chilean Death Metal productions today, moves away from the European school to get closer to the North American Death Metal School. A superb insult, Death Metal with an old, primitive and merciless sound. We also share a link with the presentation of the group at the "Santiago Metal Festival" where they shared the stage with Suffocation and Atheist, and another link to their presentation together with Terrorizer on their visit to Chile.

Saturno is a recent group from Santiago de Chile that mixes Death, Doom and Black metal, its style and proposal oscillates between influences of the European death metal of the nineties like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, the old Cradle of Filth, Hypocrisy, the first stage of groups like At the Gates or Dark Tranquikity; This mixed with the influence of more current groups such as Wolves in the Throne Room, the current Skeletonwitch, Primitive Man, and somewhat charged to the death metal of groups such as Demonical, Deserted Fear, Revel in Flesh, or Gatecreeper. They have a rehearsal demo recorded live, produced, mixed and mastered by Sergio Rojas on Nihil Records (Santiago, Chile), and a first full-length album soon to be released, which was also recorded and produced on Nihil Records.

Your Demo Rehearsal:
Shifting and shaping numerous genres in to a spine bending heavy mold is Saturno. By combining the likes of death metal, doom and elements of black metal you can come to expect a sound that is murky yet flesh tearing all the same. The track is titled Death on Hold and it is down right monstrous. Through this track, Saturno does a great job of mixing up tempos as they trudge forth with their foundation of murky sludge filled doom only to change gears and tear in to you with their devastating death metal assault. Through this eight minute offering you will hear Saturn shape shift their sound at numerous times presenting you with plenty of variety and an overall bone shattering sound.

Never to lurch from one sound to the next, Saturno is seamless in their transitions between murky doom and their all out aural death metal barrage. With riffs steeped in sludge, they drag you through soundscapes that are dense and all consuming only to switch to rampaging, ripping riffs through the death metal pieces. Combined with the ever caustic riffing are pounding drums and bone shaking bass lines only to be complimented by unearthly vocals. The musicianship through Death on Hold is great as are the vocals that rip through your ear drums. As each second ticks off of the run time, you get drawn further and further in to the dark and murky soundscape that Saturn unfolds right before you.

Each element to this offering is done so well never to make anything feel out of place. Death on Hold is a well constructed wall of bulldozing metal that is sure to bury you underneath cold soil before all is said and done. The mixture of death metal, doom and elements of black metal here work so well in cohesion to provide you with an entirely varied and diverse sound that is hard to deny. The second track on this live demo starts off differently as it is a complete barbaric death metal offering that comes complete with flesh tearing riffs, tumultuous drumming and vocals that are just as savage as they were on the track Death on Hold.

This second offering is an uptempo rampage through fields of murky death for the majority of the eight and a half minute run time. A little over half way through this track titled Fire in the Sky, Saturn switches gears to provide you with even more sludge filled, captivating doom. From the second half of the track onward, Saturn marches forth with their brand of darkened yet entirely gripping style of doom metal that captivates your mind and has it wander through passages of near ethereal doom. Near the end of Fire in the Sky, Saturn once again changes gears offering up another minute of blistering death metal to end the track, leaving you buried.

Through both tracks, Saturn shows off what they truly are capable of. Each offering utilizes each genre to its fullest extent never to have any of the genres feel out of place or in the way of the overall tone. Each track is a well done and well constructed offering that is to surely please the fans of death, doom and black metal. No matter if you are a fan of just one of the genres in which they employ, you will find something here for you. Saturno hit the nail on the head with each of these tracks, making them to be incredibly memorable as you will continue to play them on repeat.

It all goes back a year (or more) ago when I was lucky enough to hear the Advance LP of this album, something like the first mix on the album. At that time it was already felt in the air that those monstrous riffs evoking the crude old Death Metal, were going to end up being true gems. And I think I was not wrong.

This luck that sometimes you have to listen to the advance of a recording, was due to previous conversations I had with Alonso Witschek (guitar) who one of the founders of the group. Along with collaborating with some art designs for past Grinder issues, this guitarist (and also artist / illustrator) gave me the preview of the album with the intention of generating some feedback. Listening to it, I was perplexed and speechless after feeling that corrosive and crude Death Metal that every fan of the genre wants to feel. In my case, the school of the 80s / 90s totally identifies me (without detracting from the latest generations of Death Metal of course). In summary, the work was to my total liking.

Good along with Alonso is Cristian Astorga on guitars (another of the founders of the band), Pablo Vega on drums, Miguel González on vocals and Eduardo Reyes on bass, the latter being the newest member.

It should also be mentioned that it took a long time for this work to finally come to light. I don't think it was Melipulli's fault, but rather that there were unsuccessful attempts with other labels that delayed the release of this album. This is how I understand it. In any case, this material had no problem keeping fresh and raw at the same time. That polish that was achieved at the end in the sound is the essence of Death Metal.

Ornaments Of Bloodshed gathers and transmits that old aura of destruction and chaos in the environment. Chaotic guitars, crazy riffs and guitar solos that compare to the crazy days of a duo like Trey / Brunelle (unmatched in any other band or record).

If VIOLENT SCUM's intention was to create the purest and most direct Death Metal, Ornaments Of Bloodshed proves it without problems. Where violent storms flow in the endless circle of chaos and destruction. The list of the disc includes and begins with Violent Scum, Permicious Messiah, Burial in the Sky, Suffocate the Despaired, Revenge Offerings, The Ghost Tribe, Hate Worship, The Secret Cult Of Darkness and Letania de Initiation, the latter being the only one with name in Spanish.

I can not fail to mention, let alone forget the important work that Claudio Salinas (TRIMEGISTO) had, being an important part of the band when it came to understanding what they were looking for, and being able to capture it in the Master studies, where it was conceived.

I found the material fascinating from start to finish. It is difficult to highlight one theme over another, since it seems to me that it was an instant classic that gives a new fresh air to local Death Metal. Although using classic concepts and resources from the genre of the late '80s and early' 90s, especially trying to capture the atmosphere that existed on records like MORBID ANGEL's Altar Of Madness, the result is memorable.

I wish I could see this band grow in both appetite and ferocity, and at the same time, the local and international community are taking serious notes from where the world's crudest Death Metal is really being born. Chile has a gold mine in this matter.
