Pull The Plug Patches Jonathan Vreeken Yes, it takes work to convert a cover to a patch, and sometimes a lot of it depending on the image quality we can find and the design idea. Our designer is paid in patches. He takes 10 copies of each design we make to sell or keep for himself.
We make 50 copies. 10 to designer. 15 to band. 15 to break even. 10 to me (2 for my collection, 1 for my vest, 7 to sell). So at $9.50 each, with $3.00 shipping cost, I make about $6.50 profit per patch on the for profit ones (minus envelopes and gas to and from the post office, but I don't ever count that).... so I make about $45.50 if I sell all the copies I have. Often I give stuff away for free, and often I don't sell nearly enough to even make my money back.
Sometimes a band drives a hard bargain and I give them 20 copies. Then I end up with 5 for me (2 for my collection, 1 for my vest, 2 to sell). So if I sell absolutely everything in those instances I make $13.
I'm not complaining because I love doing it, but if it was for the money, I wouldn't even bother. The amount of time it takes me to coordinate everything for any given band from contact, to design process, to organizing shipping, it's totally not worth it monetarily. But, I love OSDM and it's fun. So far I've managed to at least break even, so it's all good.
